Understanding the Impératif (Imperative Mood)

The impératif is used to give commands, instructions, advice, or make requests. Unlike other moods, it only exists for three subject pronouns: tu (informal singular), nous (we/let’s), and vous (formal singular/plural). The subject pronoun is not used with the imperative verb.

How to Form the Impératif

The formation of the impératif is based on the present indicative forms of the verb.

1. Regular -ER Verbs (e.g., parler – to speak)

For -ER verbs, the impératif forms are the same as the present indicative, but you must drop the final -s from the tu form.

  • Tu: Parle! (Speak!)
  • Nous: Parlons! (Let’s speak!)
  • Vous: Parlez! (Speak!)

Example: Mange tes légumes! (Eat your vegetables!)

2. Regular -IR and -RE Verbs (e.g., finir, attendre)

For -IR and -RE verbs, the impératif forms are exactly the same as their present indicative forms.

  • Finir (to finish): Finis! / Finissons! / Finissez!
  • Attendre (to wait): Attends! / Attendons! / Attendez!

3. Irregular Verbs

Some common verbs have irregular impératif forms that you must memorize.

Verb Tu Form Nous Form Vous Form
Être (to be) Sois Soyons Soyez
Avoir (to have) Aie Ayons Ayez
Savoir (to know) Sache Sachons Sachez
Aller (to go) Va Allons Allez

4. Negative Commands

To form a negative command, place ne before the verb and pas after it.

  • Ne parle pas si fort! (Don’t speak so loudly!)
  • N’ayez pas peur. (Don’t be afraid.)

5. Pronominal Verbs (e.g., se lever – to get up)

In affirmative commands, the reflexive pronoun is attached to the end of the verb with a hyphen. Te becomes toi.

  • Lève-toi! (Get up!)
  • Levons-nous! (Let’s get up!)
  • Levez-vous! (Get up!)

In negative commands, the pronoun comes before the verb: Ne te lève pas trop tard. (Don’t get up too late.)

Quick Revision Points
