Understanding Le Futur Proche

The futur proche (near future) is a very common and important tense in French. It’s used to talk about actions that are going to happen very soon, or plans for the immediate future. It is the equivalent of the English “going to + verb”.

How to Form the Futur Proche

The formula for forming the futur proche is simple and consistent:

Subject + conjugated verb aller (in the present tense) + infinitive verb

The only part that changes is the conjugation of the verb aller. The second verb always remains in its infinitive (original) form.

Conjugation of ‘Aller’ (to go) in the Present Tense

You must know the present tense of ‘aller’ to form the futur proche. Here is a table for reference:

  • Vous n’allez pas voyager. (You are not going to travel.)
