About Teentala and Theka Recitation
Teentala (or Tintal) is one of the most fundamental and commonly used Talas in Hindustani Classical Music. It consists of 16 beats (Matras) divided into 4 equal divisions (Vibhags). Understanding its structure and being able to recite its Theka with handbeats is a core practical requirement for Class 9 students.
Key Structure of Teentala
- Total Matras: 16
- Vibhags: 4 divisions of 4 matras each (4 + 4 + 4 + 4)
- Sam (First Beat): Marked with ‘X’
- Khali (Empty Beat): Falls on the 9th Matra, marked with ‘0’
- Tali (Claps): Falls on the 1st, 5th, and 13th Matras (marked 1, 2, 3 respectively in some notations)
Concept of Dugun
Dugun refers to double speed. When reciting the Theka in Dugun laya, two bols (syllables) or matras of the original composition are recited within the duration of one beat of the basic tempo. Handbeats must remain steady in the basic tempo (Thah) while the voice recites twice as fast.
Quick Reference Table
| Vibhag | Matras | Sign | Bols (Theka) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 2, 3, 4 | X (Sam) | Dha Dhin Dhin Dha |
| 2 | 5, 6, 7, 8 | 2 (Tali) | Dha Dhin Dhin Dha |
| 3 | 9, 10, 11, 12 | 0 (Khali) | Dha Tin Tin Ta |
| 4 | 13, 14, 15, 16 | 3 (Tali) | Ta Dhin Dhin Dha |
