Topic Overview: Teentala and Dugun
In Class IX Hindustani Music (Melodic Instruments), understanding Teentala is fundamental. It is one of the most popular Talas used in classical music. Students are expected to recite the Theka with handbeats in both Thah (single speed) and Dugun (double speed).
1. Structure of Teentala
Teentala consists of 16 Matras (beats) divided into 4 Vibhags (divisions). The division structure is 4-4-4-4.
| Vibhag | 1 (Sam) | 2 | 3 (Khali) | 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matras | 1 – 4 | 5 – 8 | 9 – 12 | 13 – 16 |
| Sign | X (Cross) | 2 (2nd Clap) | 0 (Wave) | 3 (3rd Clap) |
| Bols | Dha Dhin Dhin Dha | Dha Dhin Dhin Dha | Dha Tin Tin Ta | Ta Dhin Dhin Dha |
2. Understanding Dugun (Double Speed)
Dugun means reciting two Matras or Bols in the time of one beat. When reciting Teentala in Dugun:
- The total 16 Bols of the Theka are completed in 8 Matras.
- To complete one full cycle (Avartan) of 16 Matras in Dugun, the Theka is recited twice.
- Example: In the 1st Matra of Dugun, you recite “Dha Dhin”. In the 2nd Matra, “Dhin Dha”, and so on.
3. Handbeats (Tali and Khali)
Maintaining the rhythm with hands is crucial during recitation:
- Sam (1st Matra): Marked with a clap (first Tali). Sign is ‘X’.
- 5th Matra: Marked with a clap (second Tali). Sign is ‘2’.
- 9th Matra (Khali): Marked with a wave of the hand (open palm). Sign is ‘0’.
- 13th Matra: Marked with a clap (third Tali). Sign is ‘3’.
