Overview: The Concept of Thaat

In Hindustani Classical Music, a Thaat is a theoretical framework or a parent scale from which Ragas are derived. Unlike a Raga, a Thaat is not sung or performed; it serves purely as a system for classifying Ragas based on the notes they use.

Key Characteristics of Thaat

  • Seven Notes: A Thaat must strictly contain seven notes (Swaras) out of the twelve semitones.
  • Ascending Order: The notes in a Thaat are always arranged in ascending order (Aroha). It does not have a descending order (Avroha).
  • Sequence: The notes must follow the natural sequence (Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni).
  • No Emotional Quality: Since it is not performed, a Thaat does not have an aesthetic or emotional character (Rasa), unlike a Raga.
  • Parent System: It acts as the “Janak” (parent) producing “Janya” (born) Ragas.

The 10 Thaats System

Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande systematized the modern Hindustani music classification into 10 Thaats in the early 20th century. These cover the major variations of notes used in North Indian music.
