Overview of Sangeet

In Indian tradition, the term Sangeet (Music) is a composite concept. According to ancient musicological texts like the Sangeet Ratnakar, music is not just singing but a unison of three art forms.

The famous Sanskrit shloka defines it as:

“Geetam Vadyam Tatha Nrityam Trayam Sangeet Muchyate”

This translates to: Singing (Geet), Instrumental Music (Vadya), and Dance (Nritya) together constitute Sangeet.

The Three Pillars

  • Gaayan (Vocal Music): Considered the most important aspect. It is the foundation upon which other forms often rely.
  • Vaadan (Instrumental Music): The art of playing musical instruments. Instruments often accompany vocal music or are played solo.
  • Nritya (Dance): Physical expression of rhythm and emotion. In the classical context, dance is closely tied to the rhythm and melody provided by vocalists and instrumentalists.

These three arts are independent yet interdependent, with Gaayan generally holding the primary position in Hindustani Music.

Concept of Sound (Nad)

Music is based on sound, known as Nad. However, not all sound is music. Musical sound is distinct from noise.

Type of Nad Description
Aahat Nad Struck sound. Produced by friction or striking two objects. This is the sound used in music.
Anahat Nad Unstruck or eternal sound. It is a mystical sound realized by yogis and is not used for musical performance.
