Study Notes: The Concept of Raga

In Carnatic Music, the Raga is the soul of melodic expression. It is not merely a scale but a complex melodic framework capable of evoking specific emotions or “Rasas” in the listener. The term is derived from the Sanskrit root “Ranj,” meaning to color or to please the mind.

1. Definition of Raga

A Raga is defined as a specific combination of musical notes (Swaras) which pleases the mind of the listener. The classic definition is “Ranjayati iti Ragah” — that which charms or delights is a Raga.

2. Essential Characteristics (Raga Lakshanas)

For a combination of notes to be classified as a Raga, it must adhere to strict rules:

  • Minimum Notes: A Raga must have at least five distinct notes (swaras) in either the Arohana (ascending) or Avarohana (descending) scale.
  • Constant Notes: The note Shadja (Sa) must always be present. It provides the tonic pitch.
  • Madhyama/Panchama Rule: A Raga cannot omit both Madhyama (Ma) and Panchama (Pa) simultaneously. At least one of them must be present to ensure stability.
  • Arohana & Avarohana: Every Raga has a defined ascending sequence (Arohana) and descending sequence (Avarohana).
  • Ranjanai: The ultimate test of a Raga is its ability to create an aesthetic experience (Ranjanai).

3. Classification: Janaka vs. Janya

Feature Janaka Raga (Parent) Janya Raga (Derived)
Definition A complete raga with all 7 notes in order. Born or derived from a Janaka Raga.
Notes Sampurna (7 notes) in both ascent/descent. Can have 5, 6, or 7 notes; notes may be zigzag (Vakra).
Example Mayamalavagoula, Shankarabharanam Malahari, Mohanam, Hamsadhvani

4. Important Terms

  • Vakra: When the notes in the ascent or descent do not follow a straight linear order (zigzag).
  • Varja: When one or more notes are omitted in the scale (e.g., Audava raga has 5 notes).
  • Gamaka: The oscillation or ornamentation of notes that gives life to the Raga.
