About Khayal (Hindustani Vocal Music)
Khayal is the modern genre of classical singing in North India. The word ‘Khayal’ is derived from Persian and literally means “Imagination” or “Thought”. It is the most popular form of Hindustani classical vocal music today, distinguished by its extensive use of ornamentation and improvisation.
Key Characteristics
- Meaning: It allows the singer greater freedom to express their imagination compared to the rigid structure of Dhrupad.
- Two Main Forms:
- Bada Khayal: Sung in a slow tempo (Vilambit Laya). It is serious, meditative, and explores the Raga in depth.
- Chhota Khayal: Sung in a fast tempo (Drut Laya). It is lively, faster, and focuses on technical virtuosity like Taans.
- Structure: A Khayal composition (Bandish) typically has two parts: Sthai and Antara.
- Language: The lyrics are usually in Braj Bhasha, Hindi, or sometimes Punjabi/Urdu.
Performance Elements
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Alap | Slow improvisation of notes to unfold the Raga. |
| Taan | Fast melodic patterns sung at high speed. |
| Bol-Alap | Improvisation using the words of the composition. |
