Overview of Syama Sastry
Syama Sastry (1762-1827) is the oldest among the Trinity of Carnatic Music. Born in Tiruvarur, he was a contemporary of Tyagaraja and Muthuswami Dikshitar. He was born into a priestly family and was a great devotee of Goddess Kamakshi of Kanchipuram (Bangaru Kamakshi). His compositions are known for their rhythmic intricacies and emotional depth.
Key Contributions and Features
- Mudra (Signature): He used the signature “Syama Krishna” in his compositions.
- Languages: He primarily composed in Telugu and Sanskrit. His language was simple yet evocative of deep devotion (Bhakti).
- Musical Forms: He is most famous for his “Svarajatis”. The set of his three famous Svarajatis is known as “Ratna Traya” (The Three Gems).
- Raga and Tala: He had a special affinity for the Raga Anandabhairavi. He was a master of rhythm (Laya) and frequently used complex talas like Misra Chapu and Viloma Chapu.
Compositions
Unlike the other two members of the Trinity who composed thousands of songs, Syama Sastry composed fewer songs (around 300), but each is considered a masterpiece of structural perfection. His compositions often feature a slow, majestic tempo (Chowka Kala) which allows for elaborate gamakas.
