Understanding Simple Relative Pronouns: Qui, Que, Où

Relative pronouns (les pronoms relatifs) are essential words in French used to connect a main clause to a relative clause. They help avoid repetition by replacing a noun or pronoun. The most common simple relative pronouns are qui, que, and .

1. The Pronoun ‘Qui’ (Who / Which / That)

Qui is used to replace the subject of the verb in the relative clause. It can refer to people or things. The key rule is that ‘qui’ is always followed by a verb.

  • Example (Person): C’est le garçon qui parle français. (He is the boy who speaks French.) Here, ‘qui’ replaces ‘le garçon’ and is the subject of the verb ‘parle’.
  • Example (Thing): J’ai un livre qui est très intéressant. (I have a book that is very interesting.) Here, ‘qui’ replaces ‘un livre’ and is the subject of the verb ‘est’.

2. The Pronoun ‘Que’ / ‘Qu” (Whom / Which / That)

Que is used to replace the direct object of the verb in the relative clause. It can also refer to people or things. The key rule is that ‘que’ is always followed by a subject (a noun or pronoun).

When ‘que’ is followed by a word starting with a vowel or a silent ‘h’, it becomes qu’.

  • Example: La pomme que tu manges est rouge. (The apple that you are eating is red.) Here, ‘que’ replaces ‘la pomme’, which is the direct object of the verb ‘manges’. Notice it’s followed by the subject ‘tu’.
  • Example with ‘qu”: Le film qu’il regarde est un documentaire. (The film that he is watching is a documentary.)

3. The Pronoun ‘Où’ (Where / When)

is used to replace a noun that indicates a place or a time.

  • For Place (Where): C’est la ville je suis né. (This is the city where I was born.) Here, ‘où’ replaces ‘la ville’.
  • For Time (When): Je me souviens du jour nous nous sommes rencontrés. (I remember the day when we met.) Here, ‘où’ replaces ‘le jour’.
