Saint Tyagaraja: Life and Contributions

Saint Tyagaraja (1767–1847) is celebrated as one of the greatest composers in Carnatic music. Along with Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri, he forms the “Trinity” of Carnatic music. He lived most of his life in Thiruvaiyaru, Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the river Kaveri.

His compositions are primarily dedicated to Lord Rama, whom he worshipped with supreme devotion (Bhakti). Tyagaraja is credited with perfecting the “Kriti” format, which became the standard structure for Carnatic compositions.

  • Pancharatna Kritis: A set of five gems composed in the Ghana Ragas: Nata, Gaula, Arabhi, Varali, and Sri.
  • Language: Most of his compositions are in Telugu, while some are in Sanskrit.
  • Mudra: He used his own name “Tyagaraja” as the signature (ankita mudra) in the charanam of his songs.
  • Nadopasana: His philosophy emphasized that music (Nada) is a divine path to salvation (Moksha).
