Understanding Weapon Safety in NCC

Weapon training is a fundamental part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) curriculum. Its primary goal is not just to teach cadets how to shoot, but to instill a deep sense of discipline, responsibility, and respect for firearms. Safety is the most critical aspect of this training. A single mistake can have severe consequences, so every cadet must memorize and practice safety precautions until they become second nature.

The Four Cardinal Rules of Firearm Safety

These four rules are the foundation of all safe weapon handling. They must be followed at all times, without exception.

  • Rule 1: Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. Never assume a weapon is unloaded. Always perform safety checks yourself every time you handle a firearm.
  • Rule 2: Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. A “safe direction” is one where an accidental discharge would cause no injury or damage. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot.
  • Rule 3: Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you are ready to shoot. Your finger should rest straight along the side of the weapon’s frame until you make the conscious decision to fire.
  • Rule 4: Be sure of your target and what is beyond it. You must positively identify your target before firing. Also, be aware of what is behind your target, as a bullet can travel a long distance.

Handling Rules on the Firing Range

The firing range is a controlled environment where specific rules are strictly enforced to ensure everyone’s safety.

  • Obey the Range Officer: The Range Officer or Instructor is in complete charge. Their commands must be obeyed immediately and without question.
  • Load Only on Command: Do not load your weapon until you are at the firing point and have been given the specific command to do so.
  • Action for Misfire/Stoppage: If your weapon fails to fire, keep it pointed downrange for at least 30 seconds. Do not try to fix it yourself. Raise your non-firing hand to get the attention of the instructor.
  • Clearing the Weapon: After firing is complete, unload the weapon, open the action/bolt, and have it inspected by an instructor before leaving the firing point.

Weapon Safety: Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s Don’ts
Always perform a safety check when you pick up a weapon. Never point a weapon at another person, even as a joke.
Clean and maintain the weapon as instructed. Never leave a weapon unattended.
Store weapons and ammunition in separate, locked locations. Never assume the safety catch is a substitute for safe handling.
Wear appropriate ear and eye protection on the range. Never use alcohol or drugs before or during shooting.
