Understanding the Organization of the Indian Army
The Indian Army is a large and complex organization, structured to be effective in both war and peace. It is broadly divided into two main components: Arms and Services. This structure ensures that while some soldiers are directly involved in combat, others provide the essential support needed to sustain operations.
Key Components: Arms and Services
Understanding the difference between Arms and Services is fundamental to learning about the Army’s organization.
- Arms: These are the branches of the Army that directly participate in combat operations. Their primary role is to engage and defeat the enemy.
- Services: These are the branches that provide logistical, administrative, and technical support to the Arms, enabling them to function effectively.
The Arms of the Indian Army
The Arms are further divided into Fighting Arms and Supporting Arms.
1. Fighting Arms: These are the troops that close in with and destroy the enemy.
- Infantry: The largest and oldest arm, often called the “Queen of the Battle.” Soldiers fight on foot and are responsible for capturing and holding ground.
- Armoured Corps: Operates tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles. They provide the Army’s main offensive power.
- Mechanised Infantry: Infantry soldiers who move in Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), combining speed with protection.
- Artillery: Provides massive firepower using long-range guns, mortars, and rocket launchers. Known as the “King of the Battle.”
2. Supporting Arms: They provide direct combat support to the Fighting Arms.
- Corps of Engineers: Known as “Sappers,” they provide mobility to our forces (by building bridges, clearing minefields) and deny mobility to the enemy (by laying mines, creating obstacles). – Corps of Signals: Responsible for providing communication and information technology networks for the entire Army.
The Services of the Indian Army
The Services ensure that the Army is well-equipped, well-fed, healthy, and its equipment is in working order.
- Army Service Corps (ASC): Responsible for the supply of rations, fuel, and transport.
- Army Ordnance Corps (AOC): Manages the Army’s vast inventory of weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and equipment.
- Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME): Responsible for the repair and maintenance of all Army equipment.
- Army Medical Corps (AMC): Provides medical services and healthcare to all Army personnel.
Basic Formations (Introductory Level)
The Army is organized into a hierarchical structure of formations. A formation is a military unit with a mix of its own combat and support elements. Here is a simplified hierarchy from the smallest unit upwards.
| Formation | Approximate Strength | Commander’s Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Section | 10 Soldiers | Havildar |
| Platoon | About 3 Sections | JCO / Lieutenant |
| Company | About 3 Platoons | Major / Captain |
| Battalion | About 4 Companies | Colonel |
