Understanding Noun Clauses

A Noun Clause is a dependent clause that functions as a noun in a sentence. It can act as a subject, an object of a verb, an object of a preposition, a subject complement, or an appositive. Because it functions as a noun, it can usually be replaced by a pronoun like “it”, “this”, or “that”.

How to Identify a Noun Clause

Noun clauses typically begin with specific words that connect them to the main clause. These introductory words include:

  • Subordinating Conjunctions: that, if, whether
  • Interrogative Pronouns: who, whom, whose, which, what
  • Interrogative Adverbs: when, where, why, how

A good test is to ask the question “what?”. The noun clause will often be the answer to that question. For example, in “I know what you mean,” asking “I know what?” gives the answer “what you mean.”

Functions of a Noun Clause

Here are the primary ways a noun clause can be used in a sentence, with examples:

Function Example
Subject of a Verb What he said surprised everyone. (It surprised everyone.)
Direct Object of a Verb She did not know why he was upset. (She did not know it.)
Object of a Preposition Pay close attention to what the teacher says. (Pay attention to it.)
Subject Complement The problem is that we have run out of time. (The problem is this.)
Appositive The idea, that we should leave early, was a good one. (The idea = that we should leave early)
