La Vie au Lycée en France
Understanding life in a French high school, or ‘lycée’, is a key part of learning about French culture. The lycée is the final stage of secondary education in France, typically for students aged 15 to 18. It is a period of intense study that culminates in a major national examination called the ‘baccalauréat’.
Points Clés de la Vie au Lycée
- Types de Lycée: There are mainly three types of lycées: ‘lycée général’ (general studies), ‘lycée technologique’ (technological studies), and ‘lycée professionnel’ (vocational studies).
- L’emploi du temps: A student’s schedule is often packed, with long school days from around 8 AM to 5 or 6 PM. Wednesday afternoons are often free.
- Les Matières: Core subjects include French, mathematics, history-geography, sciences (physics-chemistry, life and earth sciences), and foreign languages. Students also choose specializations (‘spécialités’) in their final two years.
- Le Baccalauréat: Often called ‘le bac’, this is the final exam that students must pass to graduate and enter university. It is a very important milestone in a French student’s life.
- La Cantine: The school cafeteria, or ‘cantine’, is where most students have their lunch. French school lunches are known for being multi-course and balanced.
