Understanding Mudaf and Mudaf Ilaihi (الإضافة)

The concept of Mudaf (مضاف) and Mudaf Ilaihi (مضاف إليه) is a fundamental grammatical structure in Arabic known as Idafa (الإضافة), or the construct state. It is used to show possession or a relationship between two nouns, similar to using “‘s” or “of” in English.

Key Concepts of the Idafa Construction

An Idafa phrase consists of at least two nouns placed next to each other:

  • Mudaf (مضاف): The first noun, which is the thing being possessed or described.
  • Mudaf Ilaihi (مضاف إليه): The second noun, which is the possessor or specifier.

For example, in the phrase كِتَابُ الطَّالِبِ (kitābu al-ṭālibi), meaning “the book of the student” or “the student’s book”:

  • كِتَابُ (kitābu) is the Mudaf.
  • الطَّالِبِ (al-ṭālibi) is the Mudaf Ilaihi.

Core Rules of Idafa

To form a correct Idafa, you must follow these essential rules:

  1. The Mudaf (first noun) cannot have the definite article ‘Al-‘ (ال). It is considered definite by its relation to the Mudaf Ilaihi.
  2. The Mudaf cannot have Tanween (nunation). The last vowel is a single dammah, fathah, or kasrah.
  3. The Mudaf Ilaihi (second noun) is always in the genitive case (مجرور – Majrur). This is usually indicated by a kasrah (ِ) or kasratain (ٍ) at the end.
  4. The grammatical case of the Mudaf depends on its role in the sentence. It can be nominative (Marfu’), accusative (Mansub), or genitive (Majrur). The Mudaf Ilaihi, however, is *always* Majrur.

Examples of Idafa

Here is a table showing different Idafa constructions:

Idafa Phrase Mudaf Mudaf Ilaihi Translation
بَابُ الْبَيْتِ بَابُ الْبَيْتِ The door of the house
سَيَّارَةُ الْمُدَرِّسِ سَيَّارَةُ الْمُدَرِّسِ The teacher’s car
مِفْتَاحُ سَيَّارَةٍ مِفْتَاحُ سَيَّارَةٍ A car’s key / The key of a car
مُدِيرُ الْمَدْرَسَةِ مُدِيرُ الْمَدْرَسَةِ The principal of the school
