Understanding Drill: Getting on Parade

In the National Cadet Corps (NCC), drill is the foundation of discipline and teamwork. “Getting on Parade” refers to the initial procedures a cadet follows to assemble in a structured formation. It is the first step towards any parade or formal activity. This process includes key actions like forming up, falling in, and ensuring proper alignment.

Key Concepts in Getting on Parade

1. Forming Up (Line Banana)

Forming up is the process of assembling cadets into a specific formation. The most common formation is the ‘teen line’ or three ranks. The command given is “Squad, Teen Line Mein, Line Banayenge” (Squad, in three lines, form up). On this command, the squad quickly assembles in three ranks, one behind the other, with a specified distance between them.

2. Falling In (Visarjan aur Line Tod)

Falling in is the action of cadets taking their designated positions in the formation upon a command. Before falling in, cadets are usually in a state of ‘Visarjan’ (dismissal) or ‘Line Tod’ (break off). ‘Line Tod’ is a short break, after which cadets reassemble on their own. ‘Visarjan’ marks the end of the parade for the day.

  • Line Tod (Break Off): On the command “Line Tod”, cadets turn right, salute (if an officer is present), and march three steps forward before breaking off. They remain nearby.
  • Visarjan (Dismiss): On the command “Visarjan”, cadets turn right, salute (if an officer is present), and march forward to disperse completely.
  • Falling In Again: After ‘Line Tod’, the command to reassemble is “Line Ban” (Fall in). Cadets quickly return to their original positions in the formation.

3. Alignment (Saj)

Alignment is crucial for a smart and orderly parade. It ensures that all cadets in a rank are in a perfectly straight line. This is achieved through the command for ‘Dressing’.

  • Dahine Saj (Right Dress): On the command “Squad, Dahine… Saj!”, all cadets in the front rank (except the one on the extreme right, the ‘Right Marker’) will smartly turn their head and eyes to the right. They then take small, quick steps to align themselves with the cadets to their right, ensuring they can just see the chest of the third person from them. The cadets in the middle and rear ranks cover the person directly in front of them.
  • Samne Dekh (Eyes Front): Once the alignment is satisfactory, the commander gives the command “Samne… Dekh!”. On this command, all cadets snap their heads back to the front position (the Savdhan position).

Common Drill Commands and Their Meanings

Command Meaning and Action
Savdhan Attention. Cadets stand erect, feet together at a 30-degree angle, arms straight by the side.
Vishram Stand at ease. Left foot is raised and placed about 12 inches to the left. Hands are clasped behind the back.
