About Alankaras in Carnatic Music
In Carnatic music, the term Alankara literally means “ornament” or “decoration.” However, in the context of musical training (Abhyasa Gana), Alankaras are specific exercises composed of Swara patterns set to the seven basic Talas, known as the Sooladi Sapta Talas.
Key Concepts
- Purpose: The primary role of Alankaras is to impart Swara Jnana (knowledge of notes) and Laya Jnana (knowledge of rhythm) to the student. They help in gaining voice culture and flexibility.
- Structure: Alankaras are structured based on the Angas (limbs) of the Tala. The three main Angas used are Laghu, Drutam, and Anudrutam.
- Tala Linkage: There are seven basic Talas, and thus seven principal Alankaras. When practiced in the five Jatis (Tisra, Chatusra, Khanda, Misra, Sankirna) of the Laghu, they result in 35 distinct Talas.
The Sooladi Sapta Talas
The seven Alankaras correspond to the seven Talas. Below is the list of Talas and their Anga structure:
| Tala Name | Anga Structure | Symbolic Notation |
|---|---|---|
| Dhruva | Laghu, Drutam, Laghu, Laghu | I 0 I I |
| Matya | Laghu, Drutam, Laghu | I 0 I |
| Rupaka | Drutam, Laghu | 0 I |
| Jhampa | Laghu, Anudrutam, Drutam | I U 0 |
| Triputa | Laghu, Drutam, Drutam | I 0 0 |
| Ata | Laghu, Laghu, Drutam, Drutam | I I 0 0 |
| Eka | Laghu | I |
Practice Guidelines
Students are expected to sing these Alankaras in three speeds (Kaalas). The first speed is the base, the second is twice as fast, and the third is four times as fast as the first. This rigorous practice ensures a strong foundation for singing Varnams and Kritis later.
