Understanding Raga Identification
In Hindustani Classical Music, identifying a Raga is a fundamental skill. For Class 9 (Code 034), the focus is primarily on three major Ragas: Raga Yaman, Raga Bhopali, and Raga Bhairav. Identification is done through specific sets of notes (Swaras), key phrases (Pakad), and the rules of ascent (Aroha) and descent (Avaroha).
Key Characteristics of Class 9 Ragas
Below is a summary table to help you distinguish between the syllabus Ragas based on their Swaras and Thaat.
| Raga | Thaat | Key Note Features | Vadi / Samvadi | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yaman | Kalyan | All Shuddha Swaras except Tivra Ma. | Ga / Ni | Evening (First Prahar of Night) |
| Bhopali | Kalyan | Pentatonic (Audav-Audav). Ma and Ni are omitted (Varjit). | Ga / Dha | Evening (First Prahar of Night) |
| Bhairav | Bhairav | Uses Komal Re and Komal Dha. All others Shuddha. | Dha / Re | Morning (Sandhiprakash) |
Identifying by Swara Phrases (Pakad)
- Raga Yaman: Look for the phrase ‘Ni Re Ga Ma(Tivra) Pa’. The movement often glides from Ni (lower octave) to Re and Ga. The use of Tivra Ma is the biggest indicator.
- Raga Bhopali: The absence of Ma and Ni creates a distinct flow. The phrase ‘Ga Pa Dha Pa, Ga Re Sa’ is very common. The movement ‘Sa Re Ga Pa’ in ascent is a hallmark.
- Raga Bhairav: The oscillation (Andolan) on Komal Re and Komal Dha is unique. Phrases like ‘Ga Ma Re(Komal) Sa’ or ‘Dha(Komal) Ni Re(Komal) Sa’ immediately point to Bhairav.
Quick Revision Points
- Tivra Ma is used ONLY in Raga Yaman among the three.
