Nazi Worldview and Ideology
The crimes committed by the Nazis were the result of a system of beliefs and a set of practices known as the Nazi worldview. This ideology was synonymous with Hitler’s own views, which did not believe in equality between people but only in a racial hierarchy.
1. Racial Hierarchy
In this hierarchy, the Nordic German Aryans were at the top, considered the “purest” and most superior race. The Jews were placed at the lowest rung, regarded as an anti-race, the arch-enemies of the Aryans. All other colored people were placed somewhere in between, depending on their external features.
2. Misuse of Science
Hitler borrowed ideas from natural scientists like Charles Darwin and Herbert Spencer. Darwin explained the creation of plants and animals through the concept of evolution and natural selection. Herbert Spencer added the idea of “survival of the fittest.” The Nazis twisted these ideas to justify that the strongest race (Aryans) would survive and the weak ones should perish.
3. Lebensraum (Living Space)
Another key aspect of the Nazi ideology was the geopolitical concept of Lebensraum or living space. Hitler believed that new territories had to be acquired for settlement. This would enhance the area of the mother country (Germany) and provide resources for the German nation. This was a primary motive for the invasion of Poland and expansion eastwards.
| Concept | Description |
|---|---|
| Aryan Supremacy | Belief that Nordic German Aryans are the master race meant to rule the world. |
| Anti-Semitism | Hostility to or prejudice against Jews, who were blamed for Germany’s defeat in WWI. |
| Social Darwinism | Application of “survival of the fittest” to human society to justify racial purging. |
| Pan-Germanism | The idea of uniting all German-speaking peoples into a single Great German Reich. |
