Understanding Sthayi (Octave) in Carnatic Music

Sthayi refers to an octave or a specific register of musical notes. It represents the range of frequencies within which the seven notes (Sapta Swaras) are arranged. In Carnatic music, the concept of Sthayi is fundamental to understanding pitch and vocal range.

The Three Main Registers

Music is generally comprised of three main octaves based on the relative pitch:

  • Mandra Sthayi: The lower octave. The notes in this register sound deep and heavy. In notation, notes of Mandra Sthayi are indicated by placing a dot below the swara letter.
  • Madhya Sthayi: The middle octave. This is the natural singing register for most vocalists. In notation, notes of Madhya Sthayi have no dots or special markings.
  • Tara Sthayi: The higher octave. The notes here are high-pitched and sharp. In notation, notes of Tara Sthayi are indicated by placing a dot above the swara letter.

Extended Registers

Beyond these three, there are extreme registers known as Anumandra Sthayi (below Mandra) and Ati-Tara Sthayi (above Tara), though these are less commonly used in standard compositions.

Quick Revision Table: Notation Signs
