Understanding Nervous Tissue
Nervous tissue is highly specialized for being stimulated and then transmitting the stimulus very rapidly from one place to another within the body. The brain, spinal cord, and nerves are all composed of nervous tissue.
1. The Neuron: Structural Unit
The cells of nervous tissue are called nerve cells or neurons. A neuron is the structural and functional unit of the nervous system. Some neurons can be very long, sometimes reaching up to a meter in length.
2. Structure of a Neuron
A typical neuron consists of three distinct parts:
- Cyton (Cell Body): Contains the nucleus and cytoplasm. It is the central part of the neuron.
- Dendrites: Short, branched, hair-like projections arising from the cyton. They receive impulses and conduct them towards the cell body.
- Axon: A single, long, cylindrical process arising from the cyton. It conducts nerve impulses away from the cell body to other neurons, muscles, or glands.
3. Function of Nervous Tissue
The primary function is the transmission of nerve impulses. This tissue allows the body to respond to stimuli from the internal and external environment. It coordinates and controls body activities through electrical signals.
Quick Summary Table
| Part | Description | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Dendrite | Short, branched extensions | Receives signals |
| Axon | Long, single extension | Transmits signals away |
| Nerve Ending | Terminal branches of axon | Passes signal to next cell |
