Understanding German Subordinate Clauses
Subordinate clauses (Nebensätze) are dependent clauses that add more information to a main clause (Hauptsatz). They cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. A key rule in German grammar is that in a subordinate clause, the conjugated verb is always moved to the very end of the clause. This section covers five important conjunctions that introduce such clauses.
1. The Infinitive Clause: um…zu (in order to)
The um…zu structure is used to express a purpose or intention. It’s equivalent to “in order to” in English. It’s only used when the subject of the main clause and the action in the subordinate clause are the same.
- Structure: Hauptsatz, um + (extra information) + zu + Infinitiv.
- Example: Ich lerne Deutsch, um in Deutschland zu studieren. (I am learning German in order to study in Germany.)
2. The Final Clause: damit (so that)
Like um…zu, damit also expresses a purpose. However, damit is used when the subjects of the main clause and the subordinate clause are different. It can also be used if the subjects are the same, making it more versatile.
- Structure: Hauptsatz, damit + Subjekt + … + konjugiertes Verb.
- Example: Ich gebe dir Geld, damit du das Buch kaufen kannst. (I give you money so that you can buy the book.)
3. The Temporal Clause: während (while)
Während is used to describe two actions that are happening simultaneously. The verb in the während-clause goes to the end.
- Structure: Hauptsatz, während + Subjekt + … + konjugiertes Verb.
- Example: Während ich koche, hört mein Mann Musik. (While I am cooking, my husband listens to music.)
4. The Temporal Clause: bevor (before)
Bevor indicates that the action in the main clause happens after the action in the subordinate clause. In other words, the action in the bevor-clause happens first.
- Structure: Hauptsatz, bevor + Subjekt + … + konjugiertes Verb.
- Example: Putz die Zähne, bevor du ins Bett gehst. (Brush your teeth before you go to bed.)
5. The Conditional/Temporal Clause: wenn (if/when)
Wenn is a very common conjunction with two main meanings:
- Conditional (“if”): It sets up a condition for the main clause to be true. Example: Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause. (If it rains, we will stay at home.)
- Temporal (“when” or “whenever”): It refers to a repeated or single event in the present or future. Example: Wenn ich Zeit habe, besuche ich meine Oma. (When I have time, I visit my grandma.)
| Conjunction | Function | Subject Rule | Verb Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| um…zu | Purpose (in order to) | Must be the same | Infinitive at the end |
| damit | Purpose (so that) | Can be different | Conjugated verb at the end |
| während | Simultaneous actions (while) | Can be different | Conjugated verb at the end |
| bevor | Sequential action (before) | Can be different | Conjugated verb at the end |
| wenn | Condition or time (if/when) | Can be different | Conjugated verb at the end |
Quick Revision Points
- In all subordinate clauses introduced by damit, während, bevor, and wenn, the conjugated verb is placed at the very end.
- um…zu is a special infinitive construction, not a standard subordinate clause. It uses zu + infinitive at the end.
- Choose between um…zu and damit based on whether the subjects of the two clauses are the same or different.
- Wenn is used for conditions and repeated actions, while als (not covered here) is used for a single event in the past.
