Understanding life in a French high school, or ‘lycée’, is a key part of learning about French culture. The lycée is the final stage of secondary education in France, typically for students aged 15 to 18. It is a period of intense study that culminates in a major national examination called the ‘baccalauréat’.

  • Types de Lycée: There are mainly three types of lycées: ‘lycée général’ (general studies), ‘lycée technologique’ (technological studies), and ‘lycée professionnel’ (vocational studies).
  • L’emploi du temps: A student’s schedule is often packed, with long school days from around 8 AM to 5 or 6 PM. Wednesday afternoons are often free.

  • La Cantine: The school cafeteria, or ‘cantine’, is where most students have their lunch. French school lunches are known for being multi-course and balanced.
